TRX: Atomic Push Up Challenge

April is TRX Month on Ask The Fitness Dude!!

Here is the TRX workout of the day…The TRX Atomic Push Up.  The Atomic push up was the workout that got me hooked on the TRX suspension trainer.  This is one of my favorite workouts to do, mostly because I love push-ups.  I think push-ups are one of the best workouts anyone can do for their bodies, and when performed on a suspension trainer they are even better.   The Atomic Push-up is another TRX workout that exercises more than one muscle group at a time.  This workout mainly focuses on your upper-body and your abdominal muscles.

Here is how you perform the TRX Atomic Push-up:

Adjust your suspension trainer to mid-calf range, then stick your feet in the foot straps.  Get your body in the push-up position, aka “plank position.”  Make sure that your hands are slightly wider than your shoulders and that your toes are drawn to your shins to activate a strong plank position.  Once you are in the right position you are ready to begin the workout.  Perform a push-up (down then up), then draw your knees to your chest, thrusting your butt into the air (in and out), then repeat.  Do as many as you can, once your back starts to sag, then you are done with the workout.

Extra Challenge!…Perform the Atomic Push-Up to a metronome so that you do the workout controlled and on a tempo.  Do as many as you can.  Here is a video so show you a visual on how to perform the TRX atomic Push-up:

TRX Suspension Training

For the Ask The Fitness Dude site, the Month of April is all about TRX.  I wanted to write an in-depth article about a few things revolving around the TRX Trainer…What is TRX Suspension Training?  Who should use Suspension Training? And How to use your TRX Trainer.  There has been a lot of people interested in this workout tool, so I thought it might be appropriate to give this topic some attention.

B002YIA6SM 11 TRX Suspension TrainingWhat is TRX Suspension Training?

For those of you who know very little about suspension training, let me go ahead and give you the basics.  Suspension Training usually involves nylon straps with handles and foot straps, the top of the trainer attaches to a high anchor point.  For example, a door, tree, fence, or a pole.  Once the suspension trainer is attached to a high point, you can then adjust the length of your trainer depending on what type of workout you want to do.

TRX Suspension Training is a body-weight workout, which means that the resistance you feel is from the weight of your own body, plus gravity.  Normal body-weight workouts include push-ups, pull-ups, lunges, and squats, but when done on a suspension trainer those normal workouts can become for difficult, but also provide your body with excellent muscle definition.

So what is “TRX” Suspension Training?  There are a few different types of suspension trainers out there, but only TRX delivers product that is extremely safe to use and very user-friendly.  They have tested and redesigned their trainers, so that the user can have complete confidence  in the durability of TRX Trainer.  TRX Suspension Trainers can hold up to 2000 lbs., and that should be enough to hold your weight, you just want to make sure that you attach your TRX to solid anchor.

Who Should Use Suspension Training?

trx6 TRX Suspension TrainingIf you are wondering if TRX Suspension Training is for you? Then I would say, “Yes!”  There are some people out there who say that you can easily injure yourself on the TRX, but that goes for any workout tools.  People injure themselves all the time while lifting weights, because they are doing it improperly.  Look, I have seen 350 pound people using the TRX Suspension Trainer, now can they perform all of the 300 plus workouts that the TRX offers? No, but they are still able to use it and build lean muscle mass to help burn that fat.

I would say that the TRX is for anyone, just know your limitations and know which workouts to start with, because there are some more advanced workout that you might have to work your way too.

TRX Suspension Training is also great for personal trainers and athletes.  In fact, there are plenty of world renowned personal trainers who swear by this product, and the same goes for professional athletes.   Mix Martial Arts (MMA), has gladly adopted this workout tool into their world, but there are also other sports that use it as well.  NFL players, Baseball Players, Basketball players, and even Soccer Players use suspension training.  In fact, the whole US Women’s soccer team works out with this tool regularly.

So whether you are a pro-athlete or an average joe, TRX Suspension Training is definitely for you.

How To Use TRX Suspension Training?

Suspension Training should be used as another addition in your workout repertoire.  Just like you should not just to weight lifting or just to cardio, you should not just do all Suspension Training.  If you are going to focus most of your workouts around the TRX then make sure to add some kettlebell or dumbbell workouts, and some cardio.  Interval training would compliment the TRX very well, as would some resistance bands.

Before performing an exercise, make sure you have read all of the safety instructions.  Then when you are ready, make sure that you adjust the TRX Straps to the right length.  Whether you are doing an upper-body workout or a lower-body workout, make sure that you keep your core engaged through the whole exercise.  If your back starts to dip, or if you cannot hold a plank position, then you might want to adjust the strap, so that you can perform the workout at a different intensity.  The steeper the angle, the harder the workout.

Most of all have fun, TRX Suspension Training can be an exciting way for you to workout.

TRX: Squat Row

The TRX Squat Row is a single leg/single arm workout.  Which means, you will be holding the TRX straps with one arm, and that you will be performing the exercise on one leg.  Using the TRX for any type of squat is so good for you.  The problem with traditional squats using the barbell, is that you can only get so deep in your squat because of all the weight.  Because you can only go down to a 90 degree angle, you really are only working out your hamstrings, while your quads get left out, and if you leg muscles do not get an even amount of strength building, then you are very likely to get injured.

The great thing about the TRX is that it allows you to almost get your butt to the floor on a squat, providing you with full range of motion and full strengthening for the quad and the hamstring.  The TRX Squat Row is one of my favorite TRX Squats because you get to focus on one leg at a time, which allows you to really get a great workout with each leg.  This workout also helps to build your core strength and your back muscles.  The TRX always provides a multiple muscle workout.

So here is how you perform the TRX Squat Row.  To start, grab your TRX handle with the right hand and balance on your left leg with your right leg floating in the air.  Once you get your balance, you can then perform the squat, going down slowly till your butt almost hits the ground and then power up, try to keep your floating leg straight. This workout is performed on one leg at a time, so make sure that you workout both legs an equal amount of times.

Here is a video to give you a visual:

TRX: The Body Saw

The TRX Body Saw Workout is a wonderful exercise to help you build strength in areas that might not always be easy to build strength in. The Body Saw workout focuses on three main areas, your abs, shoulders, and back muscles. That is what I love about the TRX Suspension Trainer, each workout targets more than one area of your body, making it easy to get a full-body workout. The Body Saw in particular, exercises two areas that a lot of people struggle with, the abdominal region and back muscles. This workout, if done correctly can have a serious affect on the definition of those muscles, working out every little supporting muscle around those regions.

The Body Saw is very effective, and it is not hard to perform. This workout might be easy to do, but you might find that after a few reps, that you might have a hard time keeping the correct form. When that happens, then you must stop and take a break, it is key to do this workout properly, so that you can maximize your results and not injure yourself. The Body Saw is performed by putting your feet in the foot loops and getting in a plank position with your elbows on the ground. With your arms at a 90 degree angle, and your feet suspended in the air, push your body back so that your arms start to straigten a bit. Make sure to keep your abdominals and back muscle engaged, do not slouch or arch your back, think of yourself as a 2×4 piece of wood, straight as can be.

Here is a video to explain the workout in more detail:

I have had the opportunity to use the new TRX Force Kit: Tactical for a few weeks now, and I have got to say that I have really enjoyed the changes TRX made with this Suspension Trainer.  I have been able to workout on each Suspension trainer that TRX offers and I would have to say that although I really loved the original versions, I love the new TRX Force Kit even more.

P1000276 TRX Force Kit: TacticalSo what is better? Well, the first thing I noticed was the new rubberized handles.  I wasn’t so concerned about the durability of them, because I could tell the quality was really good, I was more concerned about how comfortable they were on my hands.  I was pleasantly surprised to find out how comfortable the new handles were when I started working out, they provided incredible grip and I did not experience any type of discomfort.  Plus, they felt solid, which gave me more confidence  and an ease of mind when performing my workouts.

P1000274 TRX Force Kit: TacticalThe next piece that I tested was the D-rings, which replaced the cam buckles.  This to me is one of the most crucial parts of the TRX Trainer because it has to be able to hold your weight and not slip.  I was happy to find that the D-rings were very easy to use and made it very easy to adjust the height of my suspension trainer.  I tried to perform some very demanding workouts to see if the rings would slip in any type of way, and they did not budge at all.  I actually really like the D-rings, not only are they durable and easy to use, they helped reduce the overall weight of the Suspension Strap to around 1.5 pounds, instead of 2 pounds.  Which is not a huge amount, but every little bit counts.

Here are some more features (which I like to call “bonuses”) I enjoyed about the New TRX Force Kit:

  • The Mesh Bag: Very roomy, and you can wear it like a backpack.  Hands-free is always better in my mind.
  • Extender Strap: It is around 38 inches long, so you can really attach it to some high anchor points if you have too.
  • Two DVDs: They include instructions, a couple workouts, and some agility drills

It also comes with the basics, like the TRX door anchor and the “Workout in progress” doorknob sign.

Even though there are some cool improvements to the TRX Force Kit, it was the “Tactical” part that got me really excited.  The New TRX Force Kit includes a 12-week workout program that is designed for strengthening and adding mobility to your body.

The 12-weeks are split into 3 phases.  The 1st phase is to help maximize your core strength and overall body strength, the 2nd phase is to help you strengthen your arms and legs, but still maintain your core power, and the 3rd phase is all about interval training. Each phase is 4-weeks long and there are 4 workouts per week.

My Review of The TRX Force Tactical Conditioning Program:

At first I was a little overwhelmed when I opened the book and tried to make sense of the workout regiment.  But once I calmed down, it was very easy to follow.  Each phase  corresponds with a workout module map that provides all the workouts you will be doing in that phase, so all you have to do is pull out the poster and find the exercise the regime is calling for.  It is as simple as that.

There is a workout guide for each day, and it is easily planned out for you to follow.  The guide will tell you which workout to perform,  how many reps to do, and how many seconds to hold a position.  Everything is laid out for you in detail, which makes it very easy to read.

There is no doubt in my mind that if someone were to follow this Conditioning Program for the whole 12-weeks they would see some amazing results.  You can build great strength by just doing a few workouts on the TRX trainer, let alone 12-weeks of workouts.  The sky is the limit and if you are serious about getting into the best shape of your life, then this is the way to do it.

What is a Suspension Trainer?

A suspension trainer is usually made from nylon straps with an anchoring point and some handles.  They usually adjust in length so that you can do different types of workouts.

Does Suspension Training Work?

Suspension training is an excellent way to workout.  It is a great way to build full-body strength, but especially core strength.  You can even use your suspension trainer for cardio, speed agility, and flexibility exercises.  In fact, there are over 300 exercises you can do with the TRX Suspension Trainer.  The great part about suspension training is that it is a body-weight exercise, so that  you will build lean muscle, but they also compliment weight training too if you want more of a bulky look.

What Sets TRX Apart?

TRX make their straps from the best quality of nylon. They are rated up to 1000 lbs, and they also come with a 65 min training DVD and other materials to help you be very successful.  All of TRX product comes with a 30-day 100% satisfaction guarantee.
