The Benefits of Burpees

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)
Thursday, January 14th, 2010

I wrote an article about burpees not to long ago, and it pretty much explains to you… how to perform a burpee.  Now I want to tell you about the benefits of burpees for your body.  This is a workout that is starting to become more and more popular in people’s workout routines and there is a reason why.  Burpees are a calisthenic exercise mostly used by coaches and personal trainers to train their players because burpees are great for your overall fitness, heart, and weight loss.  Burpees are great for developing power and strength, and you will be raising your heart rate at the same time.

More benefits of Burpees:

burpees 300x1991 The Benefits of BurpeesA Cardio Workout – I have heard of people doing burpees for 20 to 30 minutes, but that is something you will have to work up too.  Burpees are great for getting your heart rate up in a short amount of time, they are explosive and sweat inducing.  Many people try to do burpees as quickly as possible to max their heart rate.  Here is the most common way people do burpees: Perform 20 burpees; take a 20-second break; then do 19 burpees; 20-second break; 18 burpees…continue in descending order until get down to one.

Burns Fat – Burpees are an anaerobic workout that will help you shed off the pounds.  Using your body as resistance is a great way to build lean muscle and burn fat.

Full Body Workout – Burpees are not only great for your heart, but they are also great for your arms, chest, core, legs, but and back muscles.

No Equipment needed – Cheap is best!  A normal burpee does not require any workout equipment, all you need is your body and mental toughness.

Flexibility – This is definitely not the primary reason for burpees, but it does help  your flexibility in you hips, core, legs, and back.

Hope you enjoy your Burpee workout.  Come back to Ask The Fitness Dude for more free personal training advice.

Time Saving Workouts

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)

I hear this excuse all the time…”I do not have enough time to workout.”  I know there is some cases where that is a valid statement, but very few.  For the most apart (99.9% of the time) there is time to exercise, but people either are too lazy or they really do not have a desire to workout.  It is simple to get some workouts in everyday if you train yourself and get in the habit of doing it.  We are habitual creatures, so it is difficult to break bad habits and start a new ones, but it is possible. Here are some time saving workouts and tips.

dips 300x232 Time Saving WorkoutsFirst, write out a workout plan that you can do everyday at your home.  It can involve push ups, lunges, squats, and crunches.   Make sure that you alternate workouts, for example…You can do chest and arms Monday, and then do legs and abs Tuesday, and keep on rotating. Remember to do some type of workout at least 6 days a week to start off, so you can get in the habit of working out.

The workouts do not have to be long, but they do have to be effective.  When I do push ups, I do as many as possible, and I do it three times.  I then move onto some dumbbell workouts, where I work on my biceps, shoulders, and triceps.  I also like to involve an exercise ball when using dumbbells, but that is mostly more chest work.  For the most part, make sure that your workouts are slow and controlled throughout whole motion.  But you can also pump out some quick reps to involve more muscle tissue, just make sure that you are still controlled and focusing on the desired muscle.

When all is said and done it takes me about 10 to 15 minutes to do an upper body workout.  I do it before I go to bed, but you can also do it when you wake up if you are a morning person.

So here are some time saving workouts:

Without Equipment – Push ups, Lunges, Squats, Wall Squats, Crunches, Burpees, and squat jacks

With Equipment – Pull ups, Chin Ups, Bicep Curls, Chest Press, Triceps Extensions, Swiss ball exercises, and Triceps Dips

Equipment That You Need – Dumbbells, Resistance Bands, Exercise Ball (Swiss Ball) for crunches and tons of other workouts, Chin Up Bar, and a Chair (for Triceps dips).

Workout Of The Day: Burpees

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)

So today’s workout is called Burpees, besides it having a funny name, it is actually a great exercise to add to your workout routine.

burpees 300x199 Workout Of The Day: BurpeesMake sure you have some space, and that everything is clear around you.  How to perform a burpee:  With your feet together squat down into a crouch position so you are balancing on the balls of your feet.  Put your hands on the floor shoulder width apart and in front of your feet.  Move your weight to your hands and jump back to a push-up position.  Then pop your feet back into the crouching position, stand up and repeat.  If you want, you can add a jump with you arms straight up in the air instead of just standing up.

If you are a beginner, just try to do 8-10 reps with out stopping.  Once you start getting the hang of it and start to get in better shape, add more reps. Burpees are a great body resistant workout that will get your heart pumping.  Make sure that you keep good form to maximize the workout and prevent injury.  If you start getting sloppy, then you know it is time to stop.

Burpees are a great exercise to do in your very own home or at the gym.  Burpees are a full-body workout that will challenge you and ad diversity toy our workout routine.
