Great Abs Take Hard Work

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)
Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Tired of being called overweight, porky, plus size, or obese? Then stop being a couch potato and exercise.  An exercise is movement you make on your body at greater effort as compared to your activities of daily living. Exercising targets to maintain optimum physical health and over all well being.  Also it remains to be the most effective, healthiest, and safest way to lose weight.

The abdominal region is one of the areas of the body to accumulate most fats. Especially as a person gets older the body tends to store more fats in this area. If you are afraid to have that big stomach, then exercise now.

Abdominal workouts help to prevent injury by improving your core. It also improves abdominal wall muscles strength and with continuous workout a flat stomach may be achieved. A lot of abdominal workouts have been formulated like sit-ups, bicycle crunch, captain’s chair, and exercise ball.  All of these exercise techniques are effective and promise good results especially when done properly. Although it can be done at home; it is best advised that before performing the routines, consultation with a physician and personal health trainer is done. By doing such injuries and possible complications can be avoided.

Lose Weight By Sitting On an Exercise Ball?

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)

Katie asked:

I heard if I were to sit on an exercise ball instead of a chair I will lose weight. Is that true?

Ask The Fitness Dude’s Answer:

work exercise ball Lose Weight By Sitting On an Exercise Ball? This is actually a pretty common question, and there is always someone saying, “My cousin lost 20 lbs. by sitting on a ball!” It is those statements that give life to this rumor.  Although it would be nice if we could lose weight by sitting on a ball, that is just not the case.  Sitting on an exercise ball will help strengthen your core, but it will not allow you to burn off enough calories to shed off fat.  People might experience some weight loss if they have not worked out in years, but for the most part people will see very little weight loss.  Exercise balls are great though!  There are tons of workouts you can do with an Exercise ball that can strengthen your whole body, but unfortunately sitting on an exercise ball is not one of those exercises.

Thank you for the question Katie, sorry if it was not the answer you were hoping for.

I thought It might be fun to post some humorous fitness related pictures up once in awhile.  So here is there first one!  I thought it was funny, it definitely has some truth to it too.  Many people believe they do not have enough time in their schedules to workout, but the fact is…they don’t want to find time.

Quick weight loss side effects

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)
Monday, December 21st, 2009

Do not worry!! The side effects I am talking about are because people have either been starving themselves, taking diet pills, or have had some type of surgery.  Remember, the best way to lose weight is naturally with a healthy diet and a workout routine that can meet the demands of your body.  If you are starving yourself, taking diet pills, or had surgery, then you can worry.

Rebounding the Weight

quick weight loss 300x2771 Quick weight loss side effectsIt is completely unnatural for your body to loss weight quickly in a short period of time.  When you take diet pills it can alter the chemistry of your body, which will actually cause a weight gain, and you will be worse off then before.  Rebound weight gain is probably the most common side effect that people experience with unhealthy weight loss programs.

This can frustrate anyone trying to lose weight.  It is easier to keep off weight that has been properly lost, than weight that has been lost in some sort of diet pill or unhealthy weight loss program.

Baggy Skin

This is a common side effect that occurs for people who get gastric bypass surgery or liposuction surgery.  If you only have a few pounds to lose, then you really do not need to worry about this side effect.

The reason this side effect happens to people who have surgeries, is because they lose their weight so quickly…Overnight!  There is no way for the body to recover from a surgery like that.  The skin has no time to adjust to all the fat that has been lost.  The only way to reduce loose skin, is to get another surgical procedure, which is just another way to cough over your money.

Dehydration

This side effect often happens with people who are involved in a sport that requires weight limits, like wrestling.  This is a very serious side effect because if you dehydrate yourself to much it can actually resolve in death.  This is a mistake that many people make when trying to lose weight quickly.

There are people who can lose up to 10 pounds by depriving themselves of fluids, but it is just water weight, which will be put back on easily.  Plus, it is just to risky to dehydrate yourself because you can encounter some serious health issues, and you can hurt your metabolism in the process.

Flexibility: Things You Need To Know

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)
Monday, December 14th, 2009

So what is the deal with flexibility?  Why is flexibility important?  Before we get into why flexibility is important, lets take a look into the factors that makes one flexible.

Have you ever heard of the term “range of motion about a joint?”  Well this is a common term used to define the amount of movement that can be completed at a joint, a joint being a knee or a shoulder.  However far your movement is in these joint areas determines your flexibility.  There are many factors that determines a persons flexibility, including the structure of the joint, muscle tendon attachments, body temperature, pregnancy, and gender.  Your age can be a definite factor in your flexibility too.

10000079n 298x300 Flexibility: Things You Need To KnowObviously, child years and adolescent years will see the most increase in flexibility and is the best time to develop a habit of stretching in a persons life.  As you reach your mid 20′s and the aging process starts to speed up, you will notice a decrease in flexibility.  The reason this happens is because your body’s connective tissue and extensibility goes through some major changes.  As we get older, we  tend to lean more to the inactive side of life.  Sure we might exercise and lift weights, but our flexibility gets thrown to the side, and as we develop more muscle our flexibility can also decrease.  It is important to perform full motion exercises so that our connective tissue can be protected from becoming less resilient and shorter. We need to make sure that we stretch our major muscles groups’ everyday, especially when we start to age.

Some of the areas to stretch are listed below and can assist in keeping the body flexible throughout your lifetime:

Arm Stretches

Upper Trapezius

Anterior Shoulder

Posterior Shoulder

Tricep

Hip/Lower Body Stretches

Abductor

Hip Flexor

Quadriceps

Hamstring

Calf

Soleus

Torso

Low Back

Outer Hip Rotator

Bored With Your Exercise Routine?

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)
Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

We have all done it…we decide we want to start a “life changing” workout routine, and then a few weeks into our workout routines we get bored.  I get calls all the time about people struggling with staying motivated in their workouts.  They started off great, they were even enjoying how their body felt after the workouts, but eventually everyone comes to a crossroad with their workout routine.  It is at that moment many people choose to get off the workout path, and give up, and one of the big reasons people choose that path is because they are bored.  People lack desire, and it usually has nothing to do with their abilities to workout, but their lack of determination.  Boredom takes a lot of people out, so how can we overcome that strong feeling of boredom.  Well, here are some tips to help you revive and re-motivate your workout routine.

  1. political pictures boredom today 300x247 Bored With Your Exercise Routine?Find a workout partner – It can sometimes be very difficult to workout alone, working out as a group or with another person will help you express yourself and help you enjoy your workout with friends.  Make sure that you choose people who will motivate you, because some people can actually drag you away from working out, if they are not serious about it.  Plus, your friends might have different ideas about how they workout, which can bring new variety to your workouts.
  2. Push yourself more – Now, it is important that you do this safely.  But sometimes we need that extra push to give us the satisfaction of working out.  Start adding exercises that use your own body resistance, this will build lean muscle mass and it will challenge you to do more and more.
  3. Try new workouts – This might be the most obvious idea, if you are bored with your workout, then try switching it up.  Do workouts that seem fun to you.  I always like seeing what other people are doing; many times when I see people doing a certain workout it looks fun, so I will try it myself.
  4. Don’t fool yourself – Many people think they are going to shed weight like crazy, and get ripped in the first few weeks of working out, but that is just not the case.  Train your mind to think long term, in fact, tell your mind that you are going to be active for the rest of your life.  Get rid of those false perceptions of quick results, a nice and healthy body takes lots of hard work.

There is no guarantee that you will not get bored, but you have to find it in yourself to push on and always be able to learn new things and push yourself to new goals.  Hopefully these tips can help you bust through those boring times.

Psychological Benefits of Exercise

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)
Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Okay…so we all know how exercise benefits our physical bodies.  We know that exercise is good for our lungs, heart, and our overall physical health.  There are plenty of studies and evidence what exercise can do for the physical body, but there are few studies that have been done to see what type of effects exercise has on the psychological.  How does exercise affect your anxiety disorders, depression, and other moods?

Most studies that have been performed on how exercise effects the psychological have been mostly done with aerobic exercising (cycling, running, etc.).  But recent studies have been more focused on how non-aerobic exercise (yoga, Pilates, weight training) can help you psychological functioning.

A new study has been determined by the National Institutes of Health, they state: “The majority of studies have found beneficial effects of exercise on psychosocial functioning.  Exercise can help reduce depression and anxiety, as well as give individuals an improved sense of well-being.” 1.  Although there have been few studies, it is amazing to think of all the benefits your body gets when you exercise, both physically and psychologically.

anxiety 300x216 Psychological Benefits of ExerciseExercise can be used as a step in the treatment for some depression and anxiety.  It is still to early to tell if exercise can help people who suffer with a more severe depression.  Always listen to your doctors when dealing with depression, all though exercise can help, do not think it trumps anything your doctor has prescribed to you.

But if you are feeling a little sad, if you are singing the blues, exercise can help to get you out of that crazy funk.  Just exercising 3 times a week can help you physically and psychologically, whether it is aerobic or non-aerobic.

Outdoor Workouts: Hiking

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)
Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

I remember the first time I went hiking, I was around 7 years old and my whole family decided to go on a hiking trip.  It was one of the most terrible experiences of my life, we woke up before daylight, we carried heavy backpacks, I became tired pretty fast, and a bee stung me.  It was the last time our family went on a hiking trip together.  Why am I telling you this story?  Because now, I absolutely love hiking!  Many people have had bad experiences from childhood hiking excursions, and if you are one of those people, maybe you should give it another try…you might actually enjoy it.

hiking page 1 300x168 Outdoor Workouts: HikingHiking is a great way to get in some exercise, plus provide you with a great hobby.  There are many different hikes you can go on, so even if you are just a beginner there are many hikes that you can chose from.  Hiking will build muscle and endurance; your lungs will become stronger the more you hike.  The other benefit from hiking is gaining mental toughness. It is easy to turn around and go back down the mountain, but if you keep on press up, you will not only accomplish a goal, it will also get mentally easier the more you do it.

If you want to burn more calories when you are hiking, get a pair of trekking poles.  You will burn more calories because you are using your whole body to hike up the mountain.  And even though you are burning more calories with trekking poles, you will actually be saving energy.  That extra energy will help push you to the top.

Why Should People exercise?

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)
Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

This might seem like an odd question, but it is something that people ask quite a bit.  ”Why should people exercise?”  What is the point!?  Why put your body through all that tough work?  The good news is…if you are asking this question, then you are already moving in the right direction, and you will not be disappointed with the answer.

benefits of aerobic exercises 150x150 Why Should People exercise? It is no secret that most people are overweight, especially here in America.  Even children are overweight.  Being overweight mostly happens because of two things, an unhealthy diet and little or no exercise.  There is a reason why diabetes and heart disease is affecting the U.S. like an epidemic, and it is because of those two reasons. Most of us already know that exercising is good for losing weight, and can help you avoid heart disease, but what are some other benefits that exercising has to offer.

Exercising helps…

  1. Release stress – Exercise releases endorphins, which makes you body feel good.  It also helps decrease stress hormones like Cortisol.  If you have stressful life, you definitely want to exercise, because stress often leads to weight gain.
  2. Sleeping – Exercising can help you sleep better at night, which also helps your body feel better and helps to release stress.  Be aware, sometimes if you workout before you go to bed, it can actually keep awake.
  3. Boost your energy – Exercising helps you pump more oxygen into your body, which helps your heart, lungs, blood circulation, and helps pump nutrients into your tissues.
  4. Back issues – Not all…but a lot of back pain is caused by people being overweight.  Exercise can help release the load (from you belly) that your back is carrying.
  5. Sex life – If none of these other reasons motivate you in wanting to exercise, than this reason should.  Most people complain about a lost flame in their sex lives, exercise can help rekindle that fire.  Exercising helps with longevity and stamina.  Lets be real, what the body goes through during sex can be very exhausting, but if you have a healthy exercise routine, then your body may be more equipped to handle those intimate times.
  6. Self-esteem – There is nothing worse than being lazy and having a low self-esteem.  Get active!  Try to find a sport or a hobby that allows you to get outside, you’ll be amazed how better you feel about yourself when you accomplish some personal goals.

Squat 2 150x150 Why Should People exercise?Remember, exercising is not just for people who are overweight.  Exercising is for everyone, no matter what your weight is or how old you are.  If you have the mental capacity are physically able to do some type of exercise, than I encourage you to take care of your body.  Believe it or not, exercising can be a lot of fun; you just got to find out what you like to do.  Do not let laziness sneak into your life, because you will regret it later on in your life.
