The Best Fitness Foods

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)

Other than exercising and working out your body, the best thing you can do for your fitness is eating healthy.  Food is important for fueling our bodies, and when we eat the correct food we can turn our bodies into a fat burning, muscle building, and lean machine with tons of energy.  Food and fitness go hand and hand, they are like the dynamic duo! There is a terrible rumor that says, “Healthy food is lame.”  This statement is so far from the truth, because the fact is…food can be healthy and delicious.  I do have to say, if you are a vegetarian…you probably will not enjoy this article.

Here are four different foods that are great for your fitness:

Let’s start if off right!

filet mignon ck 491665 l2 The Best Fitness FoodsBeef – I used to love watching those beef commercials, “Beef, its whats for dinner.”  I loved it!  Even though the commercials were awesome, red meat has gotten a pretty bad rap over the years, but did you know that beef is 20% leaner than it was 10 years ago.  And if you eat grass-fed beef, it can actually help lower your cholesterol.  There is so many benefits to eating beef.  Beef highly contains amino-acids, which are great for building muscle.  A 3-ounce steak provides over 10% of your daily intake for some nutrients.  Including B6 and B12, protein, phosphorus, niacin, selenium, and riboflavin.  Beef also includes a healthy dose of zinc and iron.  But with any type of food, do not over do it.  You can have a 3-ounce steak around 3-4 times a week.  Look For steaks that are less in fat, like rounds steaks or top sirloin steaks, filet mignons are also low in fat and super good.

oatmeal heart The Best Fitness FoodsOatmeal – Breakfast is for champions!  And Oatmeal is a great breakfast.  The wonderful thing about oatmeal, is that it is quick and easy to make.  Plus you can add other incredible foods to it.  Like blueberries, raspberries, bananas, and strawberries..the list goes on and on.  Oatmeal is not only good for your heart, but it is also good for weight loss.  Oatmeal is rich with soluble fiber, with helps lower you cholesterol.  When picking oatmeal, make sure that you get normal oatmeal.  Oatmeal packets usually have a lot of added sugars in them.  Look for quick oats in the big tubs.

wholewheatbread 300x199 The Best Fitness Foods“100%” Whole-Wheat Bread – The reason I emphasized “100%,” is because only true whole wheat bread have 100% on it.  So make sure to buy 100% whole-wheat or whole-grain bread.  Whole-wheat bread is great for giving you energy, and it does not spike your energy levels like white bread does.  White bread cause your body to store fat, whole-wheat bread does not.  Whole-wheat bread will also help you feel full longer.

lg grilledsalmon The Best Fitness FoodsSalmon – You probably love or hate it, but it is still one of the best foods you can eat for fitness.  3-ounces of salmon provide you with 20-grams of protein! And why is protein so important?  Because it helps speed up your metabolism 3-4 times faster than carbs or fat, plus it helps fill you up.  Salmon is also rich in Omega-3′s, which are fatty acids that help clean your arteries.  Salmon is like the superman food.  It is great for muscle building and for keep your heart healthy.

Cable Triceps Pushdown

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)

The Cable Triceps Pushdown is a great workout for strengthening  your triceps.  You will need a cable machine to perform this work, so if you have a gym membership then you should be ready to go.  Even though this workout is pretty basic, it is important to keep good form throughout the whole routine.  If you do not keep good form then the workout will be useless and you might end up injuring yourself. There are different handles to choose from, but just pick the one you feel more comfortable with.  So here is how you do a proper cable triceps pushdown.

TricepsPushdown2 Cable Triceps PushdownStep 1: Start by facing the cable machine and stand tall.  Your feet should be hip width apart and your elbows should be tucked by you sides.  Hold the handle with your palms facing the ground.

Step 2: Start with the handle just under your chest area. Inhale slowly, then exhale as you push the handle down until your arm are straight.  Make sure that your elbows stay in the same position they started in. Then slow bring your hands back to the the start position

Key points:

- Make sure that you do not rock your body, remember this is not a full body workout, but focus on your triceps.

- Continue to breathe, do not hold your breath.

- As you get tired, your elbow will want to move quite a bit, but make sure to keep them still and stationary.

The picture above shows you the correct form.  If you would like to put one foot in front of the other, that is fine too.

Push Up Training

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)

There is no doubt about it; push-ups are great for strength training.  There is a reason why push-ups have always been popular, and it’s because push-ups work.  Even though we know that push-ups have been tried and tested for success, what kind of benefits can you expect from push up training.  And then what push-ups can you do to make sure you get a full upper body workout.

One of my favorite movies growing up was “Major League.”  There was a character in the movie named Willie Mays Hays, played by Wesley Snipes, who had incredible speed, but had a bad habit of popping the ball straight up.  His coaches made him do push-ups for each time he popped the ball up in practice, he became so familiar with doing push ups that he accidentally did the push ups in an actual game after he popped up.  So whether you do push ups as punishment or for a workout routine, there are plenty of great benefits push-ups provide you.  Push-ups are great for your chest, arms, shoulders, back, and even your core.  They help build lean muscle mass, which helps to speed up your metabolism, and not only does lean muscle mass speed up your metabolism, but it also does not bulk you up.  Lean muscle mass helps tone your body, so you do not look like a world-class bodybuilder.  You do not even need to leave your home to get a toned body.

push ups main Full 300x210 Push Up TrainingThe other great thing about push-ups, are that there is plenty of ways to perform them.  There is the standard push up, wide push up, diamond push up, military push up, reverse push up, and shoulder push-ups.  All of these push ups can be used to give you the ultimate upper body workout.  Pick about three different push ups and start doing them tell you can do them anymore, then after a couple weeks start switching in some new push ups.  You can get creative; do inclined push-ups; declined push-ups, or push-ups on an exercise ball.  There is a whole open world of push-ups.  If you have wrist issues then look into getting some push up stands, not only will they help your wrists, push-ups stands also help with a deeper range.

If you have any questions about push-ups, go ahead and ask me!  Just click on the “ask the fitness dude a question” button, located at the bottom of the web page.  Fill out the form and submit.

Is swimming a good exercise?

By FitnessDude · Comments (0)

Like many workouts swimming has it pros and cons, but is swimming a good exercise?  Actually, it is a very good workout, there are many benefits to swimming that are very healthy for your body.

The great thing about swimming is that anyone can do it…except for those who can’t swim.  But if you can swim, swimming is something you can do for the rest of your life.  I knew a 70-year-old man who would swim across his lake and back everyday, the guy was as healthy as a horse.  But not everyone has the convenience of having a lake as his or her backyard.  I actually do not recommend swimming in a lake when you’re alone, the risk is to high for a cramp, but if you warm up properly you should not have any problems.  I recommend going to a local gym or a public pool to do your swimming exercise, because it’s safer.

photo 3 300x177 Is swimming a good exercise? So what are some of the benefits that swimming provides for you?  Swimming is great for your ligaments and joints, but unlike running where there is a lot of wear and tear on your joints, swimming has no impact.  Swimming also has incredible health benefits for your heart and lungs.  I like to hike a lot, but nothing has prepared my lungs and heart better for a hike like swimming has.  The endurance that you get from swimming is amazing, thus making swimming an incredible exercise.  Swimming also provides a full body workout.  Your whole body is engaged in every stroke and kick, targeting every major muscle group of your body.  The water provides resistance for your muscles, so you do get a great workout.

Swimming can also provide those who have or have had injuries an alternative to running or some other high impact exercise.  The swimming pool has been used for injury rehab, providing those who are injured to regain strength in their muscles, ligaments, and joints.  There are a lot of athletes who have trained in a pool; they have used the water’s resistance to their advantage, because even a lot of these athletes are injured themselves.

We know that swimming is a good exercise, but is swimming good for weight loss?

This might come as a surprise to you, especially after hearing all the health benefits that swimming provides.  But swimming might not be the greatest weight loss workout; in fact you might actually gain weight, but mostly because of lean muscle mass.  If you are looking into burning fat, you are much more able to do so by doing interval training and having a nutrition plan.  Swimming has had a lot of contradictory weight loss studies, some people gain weight, some people lose weight, and some people experience no change at all.  But swimming is great for those who are pregnant, have back problems, and knee problems.

I would definitely recommend swimming, but I would make swimming a “part” of my workout plan, instead of “being” my workout plan.
