What Should I Eat After A Workout?

Ben Asked:

What should I eat after a workout?

Thanks for the question Ben.

gnc 100 whey protein 11352 What Should I Eat After A Workout?Well, there are a couple ways you can go about this.  It depends on what you’re trying to accomplish physically with your workout.  If you are trying to build lean muscle and lose weight, I would say to have a mixture between protein and complex carbs.  If you are trying to pack on more muscle, I would say to eat more protein foods than carb foods.  You should have something to eat at least 30 minutes after your workout, your body will absorb the nutrients better.  Although I would not really find something to eat, but more something to drink.  You have a small window of opportunity to replenish your body with protein and complex carbs, and sometimes food just takes to long to break down.  But liquid forms are great.  I would get a whey protein powder to drink right after a workout if I was you.  Whey protein will help promote either a toned looking body or a muscular looking body.

I hope that answers your question.

The Abs Diet Review

This is a continuation on popular diets that I have been doing reviews on; this particular review is focused around “The Abs Diet.”  A man named David Zinczenko put the Abs Diet together; he is the editor in chief of Men’s Health Magazine.  He has been a health guru for many years, helping men all around the world.  This diet book is actually pretty fun to read, David knows how to write and entertain, and so it is pretty easy reading.

If you look on the front of the book, you will see the title, “The Abs Diet,” but you will see a little tag line underneath the title, is says “The Six-Week Plan to Flatten Your Stomach and Keep You Lean for Life.”  Let me tell you my opinion, David Zinczenko is trying to sell a book, he has been selling a magazines for many years so he is going to try to catch your eye with popular terms like “the abs diet,” and “six-week plan to flatten your stomach.”  Even though David is trying to sell his product with eye-catching terms, the diet plan should sale itself.

157954998501 sclzzzzzzz The Abs Diet ReviewI really enjoyed learning about The Abs Diet.  The Abs Diet teaches you how to eat healthy, and it does a good job breaking everything down and making it into an achievable plan.  The nutrition side of it all actually reminds me of the South Beach Diet, but what the South Beach Diet Lacks (a workout plan), The Abs Diet provides.  Not only does The Abs Diet teach the importance of proteins, carbs, and fat, but also it also teaches you the importance of a workout routine, and actually provides you with one.

I feel that the nutrition plan is easy to follow, and even though you might not get six-pack abs like it says in six weeks, this is definitely a workout and nutrition plan that will get you on the right track.  There are some great recipes and a whole section of workouts that focus on your whole core.  The Abs Diet also does a good job in teaching people about the muscles that make up your core. Many people lack the knowledge of muscles that make up their core.

I approve of The Abs Diet.  Follow the nutrition plan, and include the core workouts to your normal workout routine, and you should see some great results.

Slendertone Ab Belt

I cannot believe I am actually writing about this “muscle building” product, but I actually had a person ask me about the Slendertone Ab Belt the other day.  So I thought for the sake of my friend and for the sake of others, I should write about this so-called piece of workout equipment.

slendertone ab belt 300x199 Slendertone Ab BeltSo you have probably seen the infomercials of the Slendertone Ab Belt and it probably looks to good to be true.  Well…it is!  The Slendertone Ab Belt is a complete scam, and any other ab belts that promise you six pack abs are also scams.  It would be nice to live in a world that we can sit around on our butts, watch TV and lose fat by putting on the Slendertone Ab Belt, but unfortunately we do not live in such a world.  Instead we live in a world where people get taken advantage of in there desperate state to lose weight.

I really do wish the Slendertone Ab belt or any other Ab belt toner worked, it would give a lot of people an easy option to shed off some unwanted pounds, but the fact is that it does not work.  They have no research to back up their Slendertone Ab Belt product.  If you read the fine print it says that, matched with exercise and a nutrition plan you can see results.  Well of course you are going to see results!! Exercise and a healthy nutrition plan will help you lose weight.

Let me tell you what does work with Electric Stimulation…

When I was younger, I tore my knee up pretty bad.  I was not able to walk on my leg for three weeks, in that three weeks my quad muscle pretty much disappeared.  I was able to touch my right hand fingers to my left hand fingers when I gripped around my thigh.  When I began physical therapy, the therapists started hooking the muscles around my knee up to an electric muscle stimulation device.  This got my curiosity going, I asked my physical therapists if the Ab belt toners actually worked, because they were using it on my knee.  He said no, not at all!  He went on to say that the only way electric muscle stimulation works is to give an inactive muscle the help to start usage again.   Which is the reason physical therapist use electric stimulation, because they deal with people who have been injured and have inactive muscles.

The only thing that the Slendertone Ab belt and other Ab belt toners are good for is irritating the skin.  You will not get six pack abs or burn tons of fat because of the Slendertone Ab Belt.

Holiday Eating Tips

So it is that time of year again!!  Halloween was just the beginning, now comes all the Thanksgiving Parties, the Christmas Parties, and too top it all off The New Year Parties.  It is the Holiday Season, and if you are not equipped with an eating game plan you are going to get blind sided by about 5 to 8 pounds of extra weight.  5-8 pounds is how much weight people usually pack on during this time of the season.  That is why you need a game plan to help you through this glutenous season.

thanksgiving feast 234x300 Holiday Eating TipsLets face it, parties and family gatherings are fun…well at least parties are.  But when you mix fun with delicious food, then you have a recipe for a weight loss disaster.  So you need to switch up your game plan a little bit, most the year you are probably focusing on how to lose weight, but during the holiday season you need to focus on how to not gain weight.  Weight management!  The holidays are way to fun to dismiss, and it will only cause you frustration and disappointment if you decide not to eat these delicious foods.  You main goal should be to keep your weight stable through these times.

Don’t get me wrong, if you are strong enough to get through the holiday season and still lose weight, then go for it!!  But the average person usually throws all their discipline away during the holiday season, and binges on eggnog, turkey, mash potatoes, and pie.  I am trying to give the average person a new way to look at things, a strategy to their Holiday Eating.

Here are a few Holiday Eating tips:

  1. Continue to workout.  Okay, so the first tip has nothing to do with eating, but this is very important, you need to stay active during this time of the season.  Resist the urge to go into hibernation.
  2. Don’t Starve Yourself.  What I mean by these is…do not starve yourself before you go to a party or a family dinner.  Make sure to eat little snacks before you arrive to the party to help curb your cravings.  Eating small snacks can help you from cutting loose.
  3. Portions.  Eat rational portions, you do not need to fill your plate up so full it needs a wide load sign to get through the crowd.  Your stomach is not meant to eat that much food.
  4. Eat Slowly.  Allow your body to know it has eaten food.  So many times we inhale the first plate of food, and then after the second or third serving our bodies finally catch up, and we feel terrible.  Eating slowly will help your body know when it is full and when you need to stop eating.
  5. Know The Consequences.  You know that 5 to 8 pounds you have been working to get off all year, well if you gain it all back,  you will have to lose it all over again the next year.  It is a terrible cycle to get in.

Hopefully these Holiday Eating Tips can prevent you from gaining weight during the holiday season.

Abdominal Training

Why is Abdominal training important?  It is arguably the sexiest region to look at on the body, 32% of women say it’s the sexiest muscle group on the man.  The abdominal region is highly coveted by mostly everyone.  Now, I am not talking about those huge bodybuilders who grease themselves up and flex their muscles for the whole world to see, I am talking about toned abdominal muscles that look great, as well as normal.

There is nothing wrong with wanting defined abs, but here is the problem…exercise companies know you want sexy abs, and they will try to suck you in with their infomercials and their “promises.”  I am tired of seeing all the gimmicks on TV that promise you 6 PACK ABS, with as little as 10 minutes a day.  No abs machine is going to get you six pack abs.  You can strengthen your core, but it takes a lot more than just abs workouts to achieve six pack abs.

flat stomach 1 Abdominal TrainingYou cannot target fat loss to one specific area on your body, it is very important to do abdominal workouts (which we will talk about), but it cannot be the only thing you do.  You need to incorporate cardiovascular training, weight lifting, and interval training.  You need to turn your body into a fat burning machine, and you do that by raising your lean muscle mass, because muscles burns fat.  You also need to have a healthy diet, there are certain foods that can help you get your sexy flat abs, like foods with protein, and foods that are either whole grain or whole wheat.  But let get to some of the reasons why strong flat abs are important, other than just looking good.

men abs.45175617 std Abdominal TrainingYes, great looking abs go further than just skin deep, it’s not all about looking good.  There are many health benefits to strengthening your core that will help you live a long and healthy life.  If you are experiencing back pain, most the time it is because of the baggage you are carrying up front.  Your back is supporting all that weight called your belly, or beer belly.  Strengthening your abs will also help you with everyday activities.  Just think about all the movements we do, twisting, bending, pushing, and pulling, we engage our core far more than we realize, and if we had a strong core than we would be less likely to injure ourselves.  Belly fat has also been related to heart disease, the fat that surrounds our midsections is said to be the most dangerous fat for our hearts.

When you training your body and you come to your abdominal workouts, it is important to find an abs routine that will target each section of your abdominal region.  Target these abdominal regions:

  • Rectus Abdominis
  • Transverse Abdominis
  • External Obliques
  • Internal Obliques

The South Beach Diet Review

By FitnessDude · Comments (1)

The South Beach Diet was created by a Cardiologist named Arthur Agatston, M.D..   He introduced a diet that was based around balanced eating.  There are three phases to the South Beach Diet, and in each phase you learn what type of foods are good for you.  Like what type of fats you should be eating, plus what type of carbohydrates you should be eating.

The principle behind the South Beach Diet is that bad fats and carbohydrates can actually make you hungrier by spiking your blood sugar levels, which is why you gain weight.  By eliminating those bad fats and carbohydrates, you will feel more full and live a healthier lifestyle.

As I mentioned before there are 3 phases to the South Beach Diet.

ld SouthBeachDietLogo The South Beach Diet ReviewThe First Phase – You pretty much eat normal size portions of food, but you will eliminate all carbohydrates.  This will probably be the toughest phase, to get through, because a lot of your really good foods have carbohydrates in them.  This strict first phase lasts for two weeks, and in this two weeks, you will eat lean meats.  Turkey, chicken, shellfish are all accepted in this first stage, some selected vegetables, nuts and low fat cheese are also accepted in this first phase of the South Beach Diet.

The Second Phase – The first thing you need to know about the second phase is, you decided when it’s over.  The second phase starts introducing more foods into the mix, foods that have better fat and good carbohydrates.  You will not lose as much weight as you did in the first week, but you should continue to see a small weight loss every week.  You continue Phase Two of the South Beach Diet until you reach your desired weight.

The Third Phase – The Idea behind Phase 3 of the South Beach Diet, is that Phase 3 lasts the rest of your life.  You have learned in the first two phases what is good for you and what is bad for you.  The third phase is the maintaining stage; you just want to maintain your desired weight.  If you begin to put on more pounds, then simply do the first phase again, and return to your healthy lifestyle of eating.

Here’s my take…I actually do not mind this diet, it actually teaches you some very good principles in what you should and should not be eating.  The other great thing about the South Beach Diet is that you can live the rest of your life sticking to this diet, unlike the Atkins Diet.  The only problem I have with the South Beach Diet is that it fails to get people to workout.  If you were able to match this diet with a healthy workout plan, you could really speed up your metabolism, and see some great results.  Sometimes when people lose weight just from a diet change, they become lazy, and look at it as an excuse not to workout.  So match the South Beach Diet with a good workout plan and you should be good to go.

Always consult your doctor before entering into a diet or a workout plan.

A Look into the Atkins Diet

I wanted to spend some time and take a look into the some popular diets that the American people have bought into.  It’s weird to me that we buy into diet fads just like we buy into clothing fads or bracelet fads.  The American people love fads, and the Atkins Diet is one of the biggest diets fads out there.  So here is a little background of what the Atkins Diet is all about.

The Atkins Diet in short, has you eliminate pretty much all carbohydrates for the first part of the plan.  So that means no pasta, no vegetables, no bread, no fruit, and no juice.  Later on in the program you start to introduce carbohydrates back into your diet.  The theory of the Atkins Diet, is that by dramatically reducing carbohydrates, which your body usually burns first, it will skip burning carbohydrates and go straight to burning fat, resulting in weight loss.

atkins diet A Look into the Atkins DietSo does the Atkins Diet work?  Yes, it actually does work.  But if the Atkins Diet works, why is there so much controversy over it?  Let me tell you why I do not like the Atkins Diet.  The Atkins Diet is great for short-term weight loss, but bad for a lifetime of health.  By eliminating foods with carbohydrates, you are limiting yourself to all the wonderful nutrients that help your body.  With the Atkins Diet you pretty much only eat foods with protein, which includes steak, chicken, eggs, bacon, and turkey, and even though this sounds great, they are also high in saturated fat.  So even though you might lose 20 to 30 pounds, you will actually be doing damage to yourself in the long run.

Another thing that bugs me about the Atkins Diet and all popular diets is that the diets are focused on overweight people, who are already lazy and not physically active.  Even though you might lose a whole bunch of weight doing the Atkins Diet, most people never learn how to overcome their laziness, and since the Atkins Diet is almost impossible to maintain longterm, most people gain their weight back and sometimes even more weight then when they started.

Your body craves fruits, vegetables, vitamins, and nutrients, so it is not smart to deprive your body of those needs.  Obviously there are health benefits to losing weight, which the Atkins Diet can help with.  But even though you will get some benefits to losing weight, it does not meanyou will be a healthy person, or have a healthy life.

Flaxseed can be a Healthy choice

So if you have been hearing a lot about Flaxseed lately, there is probably a good reason.  Flaxseed and organic flaxseed is being used in all sorts of health food and is being sold in supermarkets all over the place.  Since consumers have learned of the possible health benefits from flaxseed, there has been a high demand for it ever since 2006.  But why are people demanding it so much?  What is the big deal about flaxseed?

flaxseed 291 20090115 1524291 Flaxseed can be a Healthy choiceFlaxseed has many health ingredients, but it is most known for being rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, that’s good fat!  Omega-3 fatty acids have actually been known to improve the health of your heart.  Flaxseed also has fiber, which most of us need more of in our diets.  Another key ingredient that flaxseed contains is called Lignans.  Lignans have antioxidants and plan estrogen.

So what kind of health benefits can Flaxseed bring you?

First, you need to keep in mind that flaxseed is still being researched, and that all the benefits are from recent studies over the last few years, studies have not been well established yet.

Here are some of the health benefits that recent studies have showed:

  • Helps to fight cancer – Studies have suggested that flaxseed can help fight cancer, mostly breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer.  The Omega-3 fatty acids and the lignans help to interfere with tumor cell growth.
  • Diabetes – Flaxseed has been suggested to improve blood sugar levels, which can help people with type 2 diabetes.
  • Heart Disease – Since flaxseed has Omega-3′s in it, it helps prevent the hardening of arteries, and helps to prevent plaque from moving into the arteries.  It is also said that flaxseed can help with the rhythm of your heartbeat and lower cholesterol.
  • Can reduce inflammation
  • Can help reduce hot flashes and the intensity of hot flashes

Even though there are all these studies to suggest that flaxseed can help with these areas, they have not been completely proven yet.  Take note that if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should stay away from flaxseed until further research has been accomplished.

There are different ways to consume flaxseeds; grounded flaxseed and flax oil.  It is said that you get more health benefits from the actual seed itself, grounded.

How to consume flaxseed:

I like to add a tablespoon of organic flaxseed to my healthy cereal, oatmeal, or a smoothie.  There really is not a strong taste to flaxseed, so it does not spoil anything that I put it in.  Your goal should be to add it to foods that you easily consume everyday.

How To Burn The Most Fat During Your Workout

It’s the goal that most people want to achieve from their workouts…they want to burn fat. But how do you do it?  People always ask me, “What is the best way to burn fat during your workout?”  When they should be asking me, “What is that best way to burn fat during and even after your workout?”  Wouldn’t you want to know not only how to burn fat during your workouts, but also learn how your body can still burn fat long after your workout is done?  Well read on!

Many people who go to the gym have a plan to burn fat, but it is not a good plan.  It is not their fault; they just have not been pushed in the right direction.  People have a plan to get on the treadmill and run…Run Forest, Run!  They will run for about 30 to 45 minutes and think that this is the best way to burn fat.  When in reality it is probably one of the most overrated ways to lose weight, plus it can be kind of boring.  Don’t get me wrong, you will burn fat by running long distances, but there are better ways.

421051338 1a660657a7 150x150 How To Burn The Most Fat During Your WorkoutI want to talk to you about Interval Training.  Interval Training contains both high bursts of energy and recovery times.  There are many different ways people use interval training, some people do long bursts of energy and short recovery times, some people do shorter bursts of energy and longer recovery times, both are affective.  No matter which form of interval training you chose, the goal is always to get your heart rate up with high bursts of energy and then bring your heart rate down with the recovery time, do it over and over again for around 20-30 minutes.

Personally, I like to do my interval training on a football field at a local school near by (obviously not during school hours).   But you can do interval training on a treadmill or an elliptical; it is just a little bit more dangerous, especially with treadmills.  Always make sure to check your heart rate when doing interval training, you want to make sure you stay in the safe zone, plus you also want to know when your heart rate is down to a good level.  Interval training helps you build lean muscle mass, and building muscle burns fat fast.  Your body will also continue to burn fat even hours after the workout is finished…which is a HUGE plus.

20070829 nikea5121 150x150 How To Burn The Most Fat During Your WorkoutWhich brings us to our second way to burn fat quickly.  Muscle training!  I am not talking about getting huge and bulky, so if your a woman or a man afraid to bulk up? Do not worry.  Resistance training is a very important key to burning fat, because building lean muscle is the fastest way to burn fat.  You do not have to use heavy weight or even use weights at all.  Resistance training involves chin-ups, push-ups, lunges and squats; all those exercises can be done without weights.  If you do end up using weights, you do not have to pick heavy weights.  Chose weights that you can control, many people try to whip out reps like they were in a race…but slow and steady wins this race.  For example, going down with a bicep curl is just as important as going up with a curl.  There are times for pumping out reps, but slow and controlled repetitions will help your body burn more fat during and even after the workout is finished.

If you have a question…Ask me!  Go ahead and click at the bottom right of the page to submit a question.
